Basic Information

Dr Patrick Verdin is Reader in Energy Fluid Dynamics in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Cranfield University, and the former Director of the Energy & Sustainability MSc Programme. He has over 20 years of experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) applied to single/multi-phase flows. He has a large expertise in model and numerical code development for industrial applications in the aerospace industry, oil & gas sector, and renewable energy field.

His research and project experience includes the development of the ice prediction code ICECREMO2 with Airbus UK, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Meggitt, AgustaWestland and QinetiQ; the European FP7 SAFUEL project; the European Metrology Research Programmes MultiFlowMet I and II; CFD-based droplet transport studies for ConocoPhillips; oil-water slug flow studies for BP; forced convection heat transfer in unconventional geothermal systems; innovative wind and tidal turbine design; floating solar systems; wave devouring propulsion for maritime decarbonisation; and waste-to-X technologies development through plasma gasification.

Dr Verdin has supervised over 100 students, including more than 80 MSc and 20 PhD/Research students, on CFD-based projects covering single/multiphase flows, ice formation, heat transfer, droplet transport, wet-gas systems, fuel cells, artificial intelligence applications, natural gas separation, wax formation, offshore wind turbine blades, floating solar, and bio-inspired cooling. He has held several programme leadership roles, including Director of the Offshore Engineering MSc course and Director of the Energy & Sustainability MSc Programme. He is currently Director of the Renewable Energy MSc course and has been a visiting lecturer at ESTIA in France, Muscat University in Oman, and Jiangsu University in China.

He is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Energy Institute, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and member of the Society for Underwater Technology, the Aerosol Society, EUROMECH, and the UK Fluid Network. He is a named inventor on two UK patents and the author of over 75 peer-reviewed journal publications, conference papers, technical reports, and patent applications. He has guest-edited special issues on Renewable Energy and currently serves as an editorial board member for several journals.
